I spotted these cookies at The Alcove last month. They always have adorable cookies.
I didn’t eat one. But it does make me want to hug a puppy.
And the cupcake cookies are having an identity crisis.
Happy Monday!

I woke up this morning to a text from my sister, Dana, announcing that she had a guest post for me. With no further ado…
Fresh-Baked Guest Post
Hello everyone! This is Dana, Elysse’s younger (but not youngest) sister.
All my favorite things about the holiday season revolve around sugar. My sweet tooth is slightly larger than the average person’s (refer to the photo below), so the constant flow of candy, cookies and other desserts at my office are welcomed with open arms.
As an end-of-year thank you to our Starbucks baristas, my coworker and I decided to bake holiday cookies. Using peppermint bark as my inspiration, I created a recipe that turned out pretty delicious.
Recipe:
1 box sugar cookie mix
1.5 eggs*
1.5 sticks butter
1 bag white chocolate chips
1 bag dark chocolate chips
Crushed peppermint
*The cookie box only called for 1 egg and 1 stick of butter, but once the chocolate chips were added I added another half egg and half stick of butter because the mix was still too powdery.
Preheat oven to 375º. Combine butter and egg in a bowl. Add cookie mix, both bags of chocolate chips and crushed peppermint and stir.
Spoon balls of dough approx. 1-1.5” onto a greased cookie sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes. Once the cookies are finished, sprinkle crushed peppermint onto the tops of the cookies. Yields 35-40 cookies.
Suggestion: once the cookies have cooled, sprinkle MORE crushed peppermint on top.
And…the finished product! (Covered the label on an empty tin of Trader Joe’s Peppermint bark.)
Not shown: the Tupperware with 3-dozen cookies for the office
Hope you enjoyed the cookies, baristas! And hope you enjoyed this guest post, everyone else!
That’s all! Make sure to eat lots and lots of sugar before your ‘I’m-going-to-eat-healthier-this-year’ New Year’s Resolutions go into effect.
–Dana

For once, here’s a food-related trek that didn’t involve any edible food.
Last night we drove up and down Pine Street in Old Towne Orange, which has been renamed Candy Cane Lane for the holidays. Every single house on the street is decorated with personalized gingerbread men, and the trees along the sidewalks are strung with lights to look like candy canes. It’s a great group effort from the whole neighborhood.
Today the rain cleared and I went back to grab some pictures of the cuteness. (My camera would have been blurs-ville at night.)
I was particularly fond of the Charlie Brown gingerbread man. He looks pretty happy for a Charlie Brown– especially considering that somebody could take a bit out of him at any moment! (IF he were a real cookie, that is.)
Snoopy is doing a good imitation of me, after eating. Lately I go into a food coma at the drop of a hat. Curse you, rich holiday foods! (Or curse me, eating too much in general.)
I think this last one is my favorite…
OH SNAP!
That cookie is the real Charlie Brown of the neighborhood. Good grief!
Okay, I think I need to go hunt down an EDIBLE gingerbread cookie. Hopefully not a gingerbread person, because I’m terribly anthropomorphize-y about my food. I’m sorry, cookie! I’M SORRY.
Season’s Eatings!
xoxo…

The first thing I ate today was one (or more) of Allison’s pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. (My mom and I dubbed them cakies, because they were fluffy like cake.)
The last thing I ate today was one (just one!) of Cole’s pumpkin chocolate chip muffins.
Not a bad set of bookends for a Sunday, eh?

Yesterday I hung out with my friend Allison, who is is in town from Switzerland. I watched her whip up a whole bunch of amazing food from scratch– that post will be up soon, I hope. After I returned to my abode, she chatted me on Facebook: “Can we come and drop off some pumpkin- chocolate chip cookies for you and your family?”
Can you ever! You had me at pumpkin.
These cookies were so light and fluffy, they don’t even really fit their name. They’re more like… clouds. Seriously.
Allison is a very healthy baker (and has skillz), so she modified this recipe (which ALSO looks really good).
In her words: “I halved the amount of butter, left out the walnuts, added less chocolate chips (really, it’s to your liking), didn’t frost them, and used 1 teaspoon of Trader Joe’s pumpkin pie spice and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. It makes sooo many cookies, I scooped out the rest of the dough and froze it, so it probably makes around 4 dozen cookies with one recipe. Enjoy!!!”
And the chocolate chips were still oozy. Bliss. (Although apparently they’re better the 2nd day… I’m about to test that, but I’ll probably give them a little microwave-zapping for warmy-ness.)
In life we are too often ambushed by unfortunate news or events. So it’s nice from time to time to get unexpectedly cookie-bombed.
Hope something unexpectedly delightful happened (or happens) to you this weekend, too.
xoxo…

Yesterday post-improv graduation show (on to level 3… if I pass), post-lunch at Art’s Deli, I went with my parents to the Alcove in Los Feliz. Last time we went there, we saw adorable sea creature cookies. I think that was in August.
As you can see, the cookies appear to be seasonal, because yesterday they had a SCARECROW cookie. You may recall that I have a sentimental attachment to scarecrows.
I was particularly impressed by the frosting work, especially on the turkey. The feather colors seem to be infused seamlessly into the brown frosting, like the milk in latte art.
But we didn’t eat cookies. We ate pumpkin pie.
We also had apple pie, but I didn’t take a picture. They didn’t have any ice cream for a la mode. What’s the point?!
For those of you who are over desserts, here is a picture of my soup from Art’s.
It was my second time in as many days eating circle-carrot chicken soup. And both times NOT from a can. I’m a very lucky girl! (And it’s perfect on rainy days– which we’ve been having, again.)
Chicken soup with rice always makes me think of that children’s book that goes, “I told you once, I told you twice, I told you– chicken soup with rice.” Anybody else remember that?
I also had a sandwich with corned beef, brisket (Mom and I traded some of our meats), coleslaw, and yellow & deli mustard, on rye. AND a pickle. Did I die and go to Jew-food heaven, or what?
Okay, I need to finish this post so I can do the next one. I think it will excite the cupcake lovers in the crowd.
xoxo…

Last night Crystal, Cole, Sam and I went to Souplantation. We met up around 8:30pm and Souplantation closes at 9pm, so we were rushing to stuff our gullets before the food went bye bye. (I got heartburn for the first time… it felt like I was dying!)
One problem at our Souplantation location (ha) is that the plates don’t get cleared away in a particularly efficient manner. So we had to do some creative stacking to get all the yums on the table.
We spent most of the meal talking about “Top Chef.” One track minds. Very Binge-appropriate meal.
This is for Crystal:
Souplantation has a very efficient pre-closing warning system (more efficient than their plate collection system). A woman came around and said, “The food will only be out for another 15 minutes.” Later, another woman came around and said, “We’re closing in 10 minutes, but you can take anything you want with you.”
I got really excited. ANYTHING? Big Tupperware containers full of soup? A whole basket of biscuits? SILVERWARE?! (My parents are retired cutlery bandits… when I was a kid I wondered why we had so many mismatched forks and spoons… and various little bowls with Chinese writing on them.) (Soy sauce recepticles.)
Yep, they’re the Bonnie and Clyde of… Chinese restaurants. Wanted in several… towns? (I’ll feel bad if this tips off the FBI and my parents are finally locked away…)
The last lady came around and gave us each a bag a cookies, which are usually on sale at the register. I’ve mentioned before that Souplantation cookies are actually quite delicious.
So the cookies were a parting gift. (And also… about to expire. Haha.) But they were also our message that we had to GET OUT. Beat it, kids. Scram!
Sometimes food can be very symbolic.
I’m bringing the cookies to work today. Bracing now for the uproar. (Tee hee hee, I’m like an evil Keebler elf…) (ELFICIDE: Coming to theaters in Fall 2011.)
Also– yesterday morning I joined Souplantation’s online community, in hopes of getting some coupons. But no coupons came. When I woke up this morning, guess what I found in my inbox? Yep, the coupons had arrived… at 4am.
Next time. And there WILL be a next time. (Seriously. It’s already on my calendar… and it’s embarrassingly soon.) (As if I’m capable of getting embarrassed anymore…) (Padma knows what I’m talking about!)
Stay hungry, my pretties!
xoxo…

Yesterday I consulted a wise person about my sad-sack digestive system, and she recommended that I go to Whole Foods and get some probiotics. Meanwhile, a separate wise person was like, “Hm, maybe your eyes are dying because you NEVER TAKE YOUR CONTACTS OUT.”
Both of those wise people were women. Coincidence? I THINK NOT.
So yesterday after work I made the respective treks to Target/Whole Foods (they are a few blocks apart on Santa Monica Blvd) to buy some contact solution and some refrigerated probiotics. Those things are not fun, but I spotted some more pleasant things to show you.
This almost didn’t seem photo-worthy, because it’s so obvious at this point, but why the heck not?
Yep, Dreyer’s S’mores ice cream. Light. I have a feeling that this will be in the freezer next time I’m home (hint). It’s the kind of thing I wouldn’t buy for just me, because that’s dangerous. But it looks good. These Dreyer’s Slow Churned Light flavors are usually fairly delightful.
In the checkout line at Target this dressed up man was standing with this dressed up lady (except her dress was weird and kinda country), but then it turned out that they weren’t together? Like, he was typing his number into her phone? And he seemed creepy? And she was with her mother? And as an afterthought she called to him, “What’s your name?” And it was George. Weird.
Tourists?
I don’t usually go to Whole Foods because it’s not conveniently located and I have Trader Joe’s for touches of faux fanciness, but if I ever find out whether I AM allergic to gluten/wheat, I will definitely become its new biggest fan. They have tons of gluten-free options.
And they also have frog cookies!
It’s kind of a long and you-had-to-be-there story about why frogs have been circulating in my discussions lately, but it involves Cole’s new-found interest in erotic literature (even longer story) and a passage about “darting tongues,” which to me sounds more froggish than erotic.
Also, frogs are adorable. And make me think of Passover. Adorable plagues! (Whole Foods also sells hamentaschen year-round? I didn’t realize the hamentaschen market was booming.)
I realized that many of the probiotic pills were the size of horse tranquilizers (not my thing…), so the woman working that section of the store recommended the little drinkable drink. She claimed that drinking just one container often cures whatever ails you, but told me that some people drink one container (or half… or a quarter) every day, for maintenance I guess.
Did I mention that the containers are $4 each?
But luckily… cute bag!
I tweeted a picture of that bad and wrote, “Guess what’s in my dinner bag…”
When I got home I tweeted the picture at the top of this post and wrote, “If you guessed probiotics for my fucking sad stomach, you win.”
Then I actually drank it. Three problems. First, I didn’t see the “shake vigorously” label thingy on top. Second, it was not as cold as it could be. Third, I drank it a bit too slowly.
The lady at Whole Foods said that it would taste like yogurt. Not exactly. It tasted more like… the so-called lemonade (more like VINEGAR) that my friend gave me last year. Which was also from Whole Foods. And was maybe also probiotics. This tasted like that, mixed with vanilla rice yogurt. (And I guess vinegar-y-ness makes sense, because it’s fermented.)
But I drank it, all for my stupid stomach. And tweeted this: “I now have 50 billion live active whatevers in my stomach. They tasted like vanilla vomit. Good dinner. They better work.”
Literally 50 BILLION. That’s what it says on the label. Minimum 50 billion.
Then I ate some real food, because most of the pills said, “Take with food.”
I got up this morning, did yoga, and drank another half-container. (The lady gave me a cute little plastic top. I love freebies!) It tasted a little better colder and shaken. Maybe I’m getting used to it. (That kind of makes me sad.)
Aaand my stomach still feels more or less the same as it did yesterday. (But I also ate yogurt with wheat germ for breakfast… so if I’m lactose intolerant or allergic to wheat… yeah, that would do it.)
I was a little bit sad to see that the probiotics were made in Canada, because why would my most favorite country do this to me? O Canada! WHY? (Unless it works. Then all will be forgiven.) (But still… this is the best it can taste?)
Ah well. Rome wasn’t built in a day. I’ll evaluate again after I finish these three containers.
PS The contact lens solution worked great. My eyes cried for most of the two hours that the contacts were out, because they are so codependent on the lenses now. Creepy.
xoxo…
