The Fun in Funfetti

September 4, 2011

Hello melty colors. Pretty.

Yesterday I whipped up some Funfetti cupcakes for a friend’s gathering (but ended up coming home with half of them… danger zone!). Which, compared to last weekend’s pudding cookie sweatshop (I’ll write about that soon), was a very easy and relaxing task.

Lately if I am performing time-consuming or tedious tasks alone in my kitchen (cooking projects, washing dishes), I will listen to WTF with Marc Maron. (He interviews comedians. It typically gets pretty deep.) So while I cupcake’d, I got to hear Amy Poehler being her delightful self. I still have a lot of cupcakes left, if you want any, Amy Poehler. (And you too, Marc Maron.)

I only have one muffin tin, so it took twice as long to bake everything. Sigh. During the baking, I watched The Soup.

And during the frosting, I watched Thursday night’s episode of Louie. The Funfetti frosting came with oddly baby/Easter-colored sprinkles. And not really enough of them.

A soothing pastel vision.

There’s something very satisfying about the methodical task of frosting things.

When I ran out of pastel sprinkles, I turned to my stash of chocolate sprinkles. So I have a few manly cupcakes. (For Marc, if he wants them. Or Amy. I’m not gonna be sexist about this.) (Or Joel or Louie. You can all have cupcakes.) (Only if you’re in the Los Feliz area.)

Come and get 'em.

Incidentally, Funfetti is a Pillsbury-only thing. The Betty Crocker version was called something like Rainbow Sprinkle Funtimes.

And it was cheaper, but I HAD to go with the REAL Funfetti. Veracity and all.

Happy Sunday/Labor Day! I am taking Mr. Tea on a very special secret surprise Trek today, and I’m very proud of my secret-keeping skills. (Pics to come, I’m sure.)

Sunday Tidbits

July 10, 2011

Plastic desserts on a real dessert!

It’s July. It’s hot outside! I’m totally charmed by these cupcakes with plastic ice creams and popsicles on them, seen at my local Albertson’s.

And here are some interesting finds from today’s Hollywood Farmers’ Market.

I’m not big on the Lakers, but I dedicate these “Laker baker” potatoes to Lauren. (I believe they’re named for their purple/yellow look, but I can’t tell if they’ve been partially peeled or what.)

Serve with Kobe beef.

And I bought this blood orange juice, because I thought I might enjoy a few sips while I watch tonight’s new episode of “True Blood.”

True blood... orange juice.

Okay, I have deli and seafoods in my future, so I gotta skadoot.

Enjoy your Sunday! Go swimming. (I actually swam yesterday… at night, because I’m a vampire.)

Snack Trek: OLD FASHIONED ICE BOX CUPCAKE (Lark Cake Shop)

April 28, 2011

I couldn't resist one... but I could resist two.

Lately I have found myself driving past Lark Cake Shop on a fairly regular basis. You may remember that I trekked to Lark in January, specifically to try the Old Fashioned Ice Box Cupcake… but they didn’t have any that day! Foiled. (And that was okay, because it would have been lame to fulfill a new goal– to try their ice box cake– in a few hours flat.) (Goals need time to marinate.)

So the anticipation has been building for a few months. As I was driving west on Sunset today in the mid-day heat, I decided it was finally time to pop in and give it another try.

After the woman at the counter had already wrapped up my Old Fashioned Ice Box Cupcake, I realized that the Gingersnap Ice Box Cupcake was actually a SEPARATE cupcake. Whoops. But the lady told me that she prefers the Old Fashioned (chocolate), so I went with that. As I said to her, “Now I have something else to look forward to (in life).”

She didn’t seem to appreciate my sense of humor, but another guy who came out from the back cake-making area gave me a knowing/concerned smile.

I rushed the cupcake home, worried that the heat would melt it. When I got home I stuck it in the fridge for a few minutes, then opened it up to check on it… and thought it had flipped over.

Nope, just how I look.

But then I realized… oh, the top looks like an upside-down cupcake. Or like a cheerful little marshmallow person.

I cut in, and the “thin chocolate wafer cookies” were surprisingly soft. Really, they just seem like cake. (I wonder if the “molasses ginger snaps” are crispier… as the word “snap” implies.)

Looks like Oreos.

On the inside (where it counts), it looks like a cake made of Oreos, but really soft ones. So… Oreo Cakesters? (In my day… those did not exist yet.)

I wanted to get a better picture of the insides, but I was propping up the slice with one hand… and it was a bit of a messy endeavor.

It also looks like a Pac-Man!

Nom nom nom.

If I were at my work desktop right now, I might have tried to Photoshop that picture. (Yeah, I know some Photoshop now!) (Baller.)

I ended up eating half in my first sitting. (It’s not THAT big. Don’t judge.) It was light, but not SUPER light. I mean… the wafer/cookie was light, but it’s still layered with whipped cream. (Ugh, my doctor told me to try to take a few months to really commit to eating perfectly and lowering my cholesterol… I’m trying my best?) (Does feeling guilty burn cholesterol?)

So that was the Old Fashioned Ice Box Cupcake. I fulfilled a (fairly short-term) dream today… well, half a dream. I still have to try the Gingersnap Ice Box Cupcake! It really is something to look forward to… I’m sure I’ll let you know when it happens. (I suspect I will prefer it, but it depends on the texture/how ginger-y it really is.)

Snack Trek: Lark Cake Shop

January 30, 2011

Hark, a Lark!

I heard about Lark Cake Shop via LivingSocial. They were offering $25 worth of baked goods for $10. I’d never heard of Lark, but noticed that it’s pretty close to my place. My cupcake-dar began to ping. (Obviously my cupcake-dar could be better, since it took the LivingSocial email to trigger it.)

I browsed Lark’s website and fell in love with the old fashioned ice box cake (look at the bird!), and was totally sold when I found out that I could purchase an old fashioned ice box CUPcake.

What IS old fashioned ice box cake? This is how it’s described on the site: “Thin chocolate wafers or molasses ginger cookies layered with whipped cream, like a 7 layer mini cake.”

Yes, please.

But I didn’t need a $25 LivingSocial to buy a $3 cupcake, so I ditched the internets and took my parents to Lark because they happened to be around that day– and of course they are cupcake fans. I might have to disown them if they weren’t.

(Full disclosure: Earlier that day, I’d already had a bite of a red velvet cupcake at Toast.) (Which is Magnolia and Joan’s adjacent.) (Cupcake-dar ping ping PING!) (Full disclosure: I was so intrigued that I hightailed it to Lark the SAME DAY I got the LivingSocial email.) (Last Sunday… I’m behind in things.)

SADLY Lark did not have any ice box cupcakes that day. Trek fail! But we tried a red velvet cupcake, a carrot cake cupcake, and a Sara’s famous chocolate mousse cupcake.

And I thought the vanilla ones were pretty. Purple!

Don't call these cupcakes plain.

Here’s a cross-section of the red velvet. After some disappointing brushes with red velvet, I was glad to encounter a good one. This was comparable to Sprinkles, and much closer than Beverly Hills (Eastsiders, holla!).

Points for the edible petal.

Anatomy of a cupcake.

I like a good fluffy mousse, but the “famous” chocolate mousse on top of the mousse cupcake was a bit too hard… maybe from being refrigerated?

Mousse on the loose.

But the mousse cupcake redeemed itself, because the cake itself was really good. And there was a CREAM FILLING. Like a Hostess cupcake. I don’t know, I’m a sucker for surprise cream fillings. And it was a light, fluffy, whipped cream situation.

PING PING PING.

So that was Lark. But I will be BACK for the ice box cupcake. Because I am so intrigued. And I will probably get the vanilla one, too– because it is so pretty.

And next time I’ll call ahead and make sure they actually HAVE ice box cupcakes available.

Happy Sunday night. Is everybody PSYCHED to go back to work tomorrow? No?? What?!

Snack Trek: Ice Cream Cupcakes! (Frosted Cupcakery)

November 21, 2010

Aesthetically pleasing.

Today my family summoned me to lunch in Long Beach, on the cute 2nd Street in Belmont Shore. When I arrived at Open Sesame they served me with my traffic school papers. There’s no such thing as a free lunch!

But seriously now, why are there so many traffic schools called “Pizza 4U”? Are they serious? Is there pizza involved? I’ll bite! (Pun intended.)

Unfortunately it appears that all the comedy and improv and pizza and fabulous gay traffic schools occur during business hours on weekdays. Which happens to be when I… work. So I guess you only get delightful traffic school options if you are unemployed or don’t have a normal day job. Poopers. Looks like internet traffic school for me… hopefully. Or just Screwedsville.

[Just kidding, I realized that the M-F thing is when the COURTS are open. I can do comedy pizza school if I want. Let's stop the letter-writing campaign. But I think I'm going to do an internet comedy class... and I can incorporate pizza IF I SO CHOOSE.]

Anyway, I wasn’t about to go all the way to Belmont Shore and NOT drag my family to Frosted Cupcakery for dessert. (There are two locations– the other is very close to my LA life-things, but I haven’t visited yet.) I recently heard about their ice-cream filled cupcakes, and that is EXACTLY the kind of thing my family likes.

The design of Frosted is so fun. I couldn’t take a proper picture of the huge colorful cupcake mural-thing on the wall, but it was very… energetic. The store is a very inviting space. Accordingly, it was packed with people for the majority of the time we were there.

They only have the regular cupcakes on display, because the ice cream ones are in the freezer. Makes sense. Don’t be afraid to ask when you go, because the ice cream ones ARE back there!

The normals... still lookin' mighty tasty.

We started out with a “royal white” cupcake filled with pumpkin (pie) ice cream, and a regular old red velvet. (The red velvet came out too blurry to feature, but you can see it here. Yes, that’s an acorn-shaped chocolate on top.)

Moment of ice creamy truth!

The stuff dreams are made of.

The red velvet (and the pumpkin in the next round) was extremely moist. (I know… we all hate that word.) Like, moreso than Sprinkles. Watch out, Sprinkles! The cake part of the ice cream cupcake was still fairly frozen, but was nonetheless had a great flavor. We didn’t really give it time to thaw. We just hacked away at the frozen-ness and devoured it.

After we finished those, we decided to go for two MORE cupcakes. This time we went with chocolate filled with mint chip ice cream, and a pumpkin cupcake.

Another round, Barkeep!

I ate the pumpkin chocolate that was on the pumpkin cupcake. I couldn’t tell if it was strictly white chocolate, or if it maybe had a little bit of spice in it. Feel free to enlighten me if you know.

It's what's inside that counts.

As you can see, the ice cream cupcakes are about twice the size of the regulars. They appear to be baked in some sort of special hollow mold, and then the ice cream is inserted and the frosting covers up the hole. Nice work. (You can also see that the non-frozen cupcakes aren’t overwhelmed by a mountain of frosting… that’s a pro in my book.)

Every once in a while I’m struck with horror at the thought that if Flickr fails or somehow these photos all get unlinked/the links go dead, this blog will be totally boring/ruined. That’s what keeps me up at night, kids. That, and the knowledge that a solar flare could just reach out and incinerate our planet AT ANY MOMENT. Like, super casual. Oh oops, did I just wipe out a whole planet?

Why does that worry me more than the much more likely possibility that the Big One (the earthquake) will inevitably (supposedly) strike within the next few years? I really need to buy some emergency bottled water.

Way to bring down a frivolous cupcake post, right? I’m good at this game. The worry game.

But until we all die at the hands of fickle, mindless nature– ice cream in cupcakes exists! Wahoo.

(I hope the aliens are taking notes on this stuff, in case our civilization is wiped out. The universe should not be deprived of these treats, just because Earth is gone.) (Let’s be real– they’re probably not eating a grain-based diet.)

Weekend Cupcake Moment (Joan’s on Third)

November 14, 2010

Bringin' back the beehive.

Yesterday Bea and I were buzzing about the Third Street area (see what I did there?). We popped into Joan’s on Third (which always makes me think of Lauren), I took a picture of these cupcakes, and we left.

I guess I wasn’t in the mood to buy cupcakes at the time (huh?), but now that I look back… pumpkin cupcake with magical-looking sugar on top? WHERE was my brain?

I was going to post last weekend’s Farmers’ Market pics, but I need to go get ready for my big secret(ish) snack trek. Just go to a Farmers’ Market. Right now. Go. You can’t rely on me for everything. As my documentary teacher (Amanda Pope!) always said to us, “You have to get out of the car.” AKA go participate!

Happy Sunday!

Snacks of the (Halloween) Weekend

November 1, 2010

Eat at your own risk.

Hope you had a most excellent Halloween! Here are some pictures I took especially for you. Sort of.

I had never seen Monster Munch before, and I hope I never see it again. I encountered this snack at a Halloween party, and decided to give it a taste… you know, for science.

Remember (on “30 Rock”) when Liz Lemon used to snack on Sabor de Soledad cheese puffs? And it turned out that one of the ingredients was bull semen? I’m pretty sure the (imaginary) makers of Sabor de Soledad are also the makers of Monster Mash. The crackerpuff things tasted really funky, and made my fingers smell bad.

Boo.

After a looong Saturday night of festivities, I looked forward to Sunday brunch. We ended up at Le Pain Quotidien, which I would describe as an upscale European version of Panera.

Why European? Where else would a (wild mushroom) omelet come with French bread and salad?

I am happy to see my omelet, and it's happy to see me.

I did that to the tomatoes. In case you’re wondering.

The bread was awesome. The omelet was cold, and the mushrooms made me feel a bit sick. Luckily Cole and I split our omelets (his was tomato and avocado), so I only felt half as sick as I would have.

All (well… some) was forgiven when they gave us free chocolates with our check! I was all over the chai.

Chocolat.

After brunch, Cole and I wandered around at The Grove (it’s an outdoor mall… just like everything else in Southern California) for a bit. I saw a few people wearing Justin Bieber shirts, and couldn’t figure out if they were in costume or had bad taste. Turned out that the Beeb was about to do a book signing at the Barnes & Noble. As we continued toward the bookstore, we encountered a cluster of screaming teens, holding shoddily constructed signs.

Of all the times to go to The Grove. Ugh.

We went to Sur la Table to get a belated birthday gift for my sister, and ended up giving the whole store a once-over. Cooking stuff is so fascinating to me, even though I rarely cook. They had donut pans! And mini donut pans! And brownie pop pans! (Are brownie pops that popular? Are they even a thing??)

Also, I thought donuts were made via boiling, not baking. Maybe I was thinking of bagels? I don’t know.

The cookie cutters were fascinating. They had everything you could imagine, and more– dinosaurs, musical instruments, letters of the alphabet, etc. I saw the rhinoceros and hippopotamus next to each other, and immediately thought of “Jersey Shore.”

Grab a few gorillas for Snooki and J-Woww.

Keep that in mind for your next “Jersey Shore” party. No grenades!

For several years I’ve intended to go to the WeHo parade, but I never actually make it over there. This year I decided to go home and visit my dog. (And my parents, because they also happened to be there.) Daisy turned out to be almost alarmingly fatigued… like, she wouldn’t even jump up on the couch to say hi. She just fell to the floor, stomach-up. Lazy Daisy.

My mom wanted to make some sort of pumpkin dessert. We vetoed pie because it’s really best if it sets overnight. I ended up baking pumpkin muffins (using the Trader Joe’s mix… just add eggs, oil and water) and icing them with cream cheese frosting. They were pumpkin spicy and delightful. And I think the frosting turned them into cupcakes? Maybe.

Good call.

I wish I’d brought a few back to LA. Would have made a nice (unhealthy) breakfast today.

I’d been looking forward to ordering from our favorite Thai place for dinner, but it was closed… and so was the other Thai place we called. We settled on Chinese from China Panda. People think I’m crazy (or racist?) because I sometimes say “China Panda” when I mean to say “Panda Express,” but it’s because I grew up ordering from China Panda.

I DID bring those leftovers back, and they made a delightful lunch today. I thought I brought more than enough to work, but my eyes were actually smaller than my stomach. (I think that’s biologically true, as well.)

Everything in its place.

I guess the stereotype is true… Jews eating Chinese food on American holidays.

During dinner the trick or treaters began to arrive, and Daisy regained her energy. I had to chase her into the street to prevent her from… running into the street. (So… I failed.)

I get creeped out when I’m the giver of candy, because I don’t like opening the door to strangers. The general feeling that people are lurking out in the dark is one of my biggest blechs. So how to I feel about trick or treating? You do the math.

And as a kid, I always felt awkward about taking the candy, because it seemed greedy. And saying “thank you” didn’t remedy my guilt/shame about being a little brat. (And then my mom would only let us keep a few pieces… so it was all so futile!)

So… I came home for Daisy and Thai, and got a little of one and none of the other. And had to deal with my trick or treat anxiety. Maybe I should have gone to the parade.

NEXT YEAR! (Or not… again.)

In the meantime, keep your hippos on a leash.

PUMPKIN PIE IN A CUPCAKE!

October 14, 2010

YES.

Today I discovered that there is a whole website devoted to baking things inside cupcakes.

If this doesn’t blow your mind, you’re doing it wrong.

Pie or cake? Pie or cake? Some genius decided that you shouldn’t have to choose!

Pumpkin pie + cupcake? I mean, top it with a macaron and make it a la mode and you might as well have died and gone to heaven.

And since there may or may not BE a heaven, this could be as close as it gets.

Sorry, that got a little darker than I intended.

PUMPKIN PIE IN A CUPCAKE!

I almost want to learn how to bake for this.

OH, and also: DOUBLE RAINBOW CUPCAKES.

Somewhere over the rainbow...

I think the Bake it in a Cake people are my new heroes.

Snack Trek: MAGNOLIA BAKERY

September 16, 2010

Cupcake al fresco.

I first heard about Magnolia Bakery when I watched the SNL Digital Short, “Lazy Sunday.” (That’s also how I found out that Mr. Pibbs + Red Vines= Crazy Delicious.)

But back then, Magnolia was only in New York. Some of my friends who had been to Magnolia reported back that it was overrated, and that the manner in which the cupcakes were laid out for the choosing was… unsanitary. (For the record, when I was in NYC I didn’t look it up… my bad?) (Or my GOOD?)

Nonetheless, when I heard that Magnolia was coming to LA, I was excited. When it comes to cupcake stores, I say, “The more, the merrier!” (That’s because I don’t OWN a cupcake store.)

It also works out that the LA Magnolia is next door to the Benefit Boutique, which is where I get my eyebrows done. (I finally caved last Saturday and bought Benetint… I’m a little bit obsessed. It makes my lips look pretty, without looking like I’m wearing lipstick.) (Dear Boyz: We’re fooling you!)

I wasn’t necessarily in the mood to eat a cupcake (shocking, right?), but I figured as long as I was there I’d scope it out. But I didn’t want to buy more than one cupcake, or any red velvet. That’s best eaten in groups.

Sorry, sign. I will not be swayed.

Besides, Sara had been to Magnolia a few times (she’s more on top of her brows), and had been coached to avoid anything fancy and just get simple vanilla or chocolate.

The store itself is fairly simple in layout. There’s a line along a counter where you order and pay, and there’s an area to the side where you actually see people baking and frosting the cupcakes.

Thing is– you see these cupcakes just coming out of pans and looking like normal cupcakes you could bake at your house. But they’re not normal, because they’re, like, $4 each. (And if they best flavors are the simple ones… Duncan Hines, people.)

Oh, but there were cute shirts. I could see my sisters loving these shirts.

What does it mean, to cupcake something?

Is “cupcake” a verb now? Sounds like dirty innuendo.

All of the girls working behind the sales counter were wearing aprons and scarves around their heads, which gave them a very Amish/Orthodox Jew feeling. I’m not sure if they were any of those things.

Like I said, I wasn’t really going to order anything, but then I spotted a very simple honey cake cupcake (redundant?), not even frosted, and thought– oh hey, I didn’t get any Rosh Hashanah honey/spice cake/bread at Hillel. Maybe this honey cake could be my new High Holiday cake obsession.

Hey there, honey cakes.

Since I just got a single cupcake, I didn’t get a box. They kind of ingeniously put the cupcake in an upside-down cup. (Now it’s a CUP CAKE times two! Get it?) I thought it looked like a lunar module. That tickled my inner space geek. (I used to want to be an astronaut. Really.)

Intergalactic cupcake.

I was quite intrigued by this sign near the cash register. What’s a Magic Bar? Does it involve magic? Does it involve marijuana? I never found out.

This is how they lure the children...

Oops, I guess that picture had the T-shirts. No need for a separate T-shirt picture. Ah well, double dose of T-shirts. DEAL WITH IT.

Since the cupcake was very portable and I wasn’t super hungry and there wasn’t really anywhere to eat, I took it with me on my next errand and ended up eating it in the courtyard of the West Hollywood Gateway (aka the Target, for you locals).

I stole my napkins and knife from Baja Fresh. (Gracias!) For the sake of the photos and my own enjoyment, I like to cut my cupcakes into bite sized pieces. (And my pizza.) (I’m very proper.) (Actually– I eat everything I’m SUPPOSED to eat with a knife and fork with my hands. Go figure.)

Glamour shotz.

To my mild disappointment, the cupcake was just honey, no spice. It actually tasted like the cake version of a honey-flavored Teddy Graham. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.)

In case you don’t remember Teddy Grahams, this may jog your memory.

Childhood memories.

The packaging was different, when I was a kid. And I think the current bear is a little too in-your-face (with cookie nutrition facts?). Oh the times, they are a-changing.

But back to the cupcake. I don’t think it was as moist as Sprinkles. (OH– as I was driving from Magnolia to Target, I saw a Sprinkles store in the works on La Cienega, not far from the Beverly Center… also not far from the Beverly Hills location of Sprinkles. Lame?) [Oops-- It's actually an offshoot of the BH store... I defer to Crystal's insight in the comments.]

The slight lack of moisture probably wouldn’t have been as apparent if the cupcake had been frosted… but that’s no excuse. (AS YOU KNOW, I’m not that into frosting, so I was fine without it.)

Is a frosting free cupcake even a cupcake? What’s keeping it from being a muffin?

Whatever.

Cole was coming to meet me at the Target, so I left some cupcake for him and luxuriated in the sun (a rarity, for me), listening to a guy on a cell phone ask his friend/maybe assistant for a sample of sand from Playa del Rey. I got a mild sunburn on my chest, and apparently walked away right as my improv classmate was approaching to say hi. (Sorry, Scott.)

I like big shadows and I cannot lie.

Sometimes it’s nice to take a few minutes to just sit back, relax, and eavesdrop on strangers. (I also eavesdrop on strangers while carrying on conversations with friends… very talented ears.)

So… that was Magnolia. I definitely want to try some other flavors, especially with Lauren/Sara/Bea/GIRLZ (sorry Cole, you were great). The more people, the more flavors we can try.

I cupcake my friends! (EW!)

Oh, and I STILL need to find a new honey/spice bread/cake. Applications will be accepted year round.

Snack of the Afternoon, 9/9/10: APPLES & HONEY

September 9, 2010

L'Shanah Tovah!

This was actually my snack yesterday afternoon, but I saved it for today because it’s OFFICIALLY Rosh Hashanah RIGHT NOW. But I’m going to eat apples & honey again tonight, so this isn’t a TOTAL lie.

As legend has it, this should cause me to have a sweet new year.

I’m not the type of person who adds sugar to fruit, because fruit is already sweet, but I gotta say– the tart Granny Smith apple with that sweet honey was delectable. And still healthy.

Now, if you’re looking for a sweeter, less healthy, apple-related way to celebrate the new year, I direct you to this most brilliant (as in, shiny) cupcake. It was spotted by one of my Binge operatives at a Crumbs Bake Shop in NYC. (I didn’t Binge-tag it because I didn’t take it myself.)

My sweet tooth hurts, just looking at this.

A big apple in The Big Apple. Get it?

That might go down as one of my favorite pictures ever. I spent several minutes gaping at it, earlier today. I consulted the Crumbs website, and they don’t list whatever flavor this is. [Wait! It's called The Big Apple... and it has to do with teacher appreciation? That's all I got.] I’m guessing it’s apple-something? Whatever it is, I love it.

Apples and honey!

xoxo…
